If you are experiencing a medical emergency, please call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room immediately.
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein, usually in the legs. DVT can cause leg pain or swelling but can also occur with no symptoms. DVT is serious because blood clots can break loose, travel to your lungs, and block blood flow (pulmonary embolism).
- Swelling in the affected leg
- Pain or tenderness in the leg
- Leg cramping that often starts in the calf
- Red or discolored skin on the leg
- Warmth in the affected area
